What gets changed at 10,000 km
On most modern BMW motorcycles the service is every 10,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. Here is what it usually covers; the exact list for your model is in its plan.
Every service
- Oil and oil filter. The quantity and grade differ by model, see the plan.
- Brake check: pad and disc thickness, leaks, fluid level.
- Tyres: tread, age (DOT), pressure.
- Chain or shaft: chain tension and lubrication, leaks at the final drive.
- Lights, horn, switches and a diagnostic read-out for faults.
Every second service (around 20,000 km)
- Valves: clearance check and adjustment on boxers and most engines.
- Spark plugs, on many models.
- Air filter, more often if you ride in dust.
- Final drive oil, on shaft-driven models.
By time, not by kilometres
- Brake fluid: every 2 years, because it absorbs moisture however little you ride.
- Tyres: after about 5–6 years the rubber hardens, even with tread left.
Why stick to the schedule
BMW's intervals are worked out for each engine. A skipped service costs little now and a lot later: worn bearings, burnt valves, brakes that fail. And a full service history raises the price when you sell.
